Marlins' Burger Breaks Out for 3 Hits as Team Rallies to Win Opener Against Nationals
Miami Marlins' Brian Burger Batters Nationals
The Miami Marlins erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they defeated the Washington Nationals 7-5 in the first game of their three-game series at LoanDepot Park on Thursday.
Brian Burger drove in the go-ahead run with a double off Nationals reliever Wander Suero.
Burger also singled and scored during the Marlins' three-run first inning and doubled in the eighth.
Marlins' Offense Comes Alive
The Marlins offense came alive after scoring just two runs on six hits in their previous two games.
They had 11 hits against the Nationals, including three doubles and a home run.
Bryan De La Cruz hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, while Jorge Soler singled in a run in the first and walked with the bases loaded in the sixth.
It was the first time the Marlins scored at least four runs in an inning since June 24.
Bullpen Struggles
The Marlins' bullpen allowed three runs in the ninth inning and almost blew the game.
Tanner Scott allowed a single and two walks to load the bases, and Richard Bleier surrendered a two-run double to Juan Soto.
Anthony Bender came in to get the final out with the tying run at third.
Nats' Struggles Continue
For the Nationals, it was another disappointing loss in a season that has been full of them.
They have lost 12 of their last 15 games and are now 35-68, the worst record in the National League.
Patrick Corbin started for the Nationals and allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
He struck out five but walked four.
Looking Ahead
The Marlins will face the Nationals again on Friday night.
Sandy Alcantara will start for the Marlins, while Josiah Gray will go for the Nationals.
